The Acting Deputy President (Senator Childs) informed the Senate that

the President had received a letter from the Leader of the Australian

Democrats (Senator Kernot) advising that this day she intended to

move--That, in the opinion of the Senate, the following is a matter of


The necessity for the Government to address the growing impact on the

current account deficit of the growth of consumption imports largely

funded by the increase in household debt, and the need for the

Government to review its inadequate industry, trade and banking

policies to prevent recurring balance of payments crises.

The proposal was supported by 4 Senators.

Senator Kernot moved the motion.

Debate ensued.
