CONSIDERATION OF LEGISLATION

Order of the day read for the adjourned debate on the motion of the

Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories (Senator

Faulkner)--That the order of the Senate of 29 November 1994, relating to

the consideration of legislation, be amended as follows:

Omit paragraph (1), substitute the following paragraph:

"(1) For the reasons set out in this resolution, where a bill:

(a) is first introduced in the Senate by a minister in a

period of sittings; or

(b) is received from the House of Representativesand was

introduced in the House of Representatives in the same

period of sittings,

and a motion is moved for the second reading of the bill, debate

on that motion shall be adjourned at the conclusion of the

speech of the Senator moving the motion and resumption of the

debate shall be made an order of the day for the first day of

sitting in the next period of sittings without any question

being put.'.

And on the amendment moved by Senator Chamarette--After paragraph (b),

insert the following word and paragraph:

"; or (c) is received from the House of Representatives after the

expiration of two-thirds of the total number of days of

sitting of the Senate scheduled for that period of

sittings".

Debate resumed.

Question--That the amendment be agreed to--put and passed.

The Minister for the Environment, Sport and Territories (Senator

Faulkner), by leave and at the request of the Minister for Primary

Industries and Energy (Senator Collins), amended Government Business

notice of motion no. 1 standing in the name of Senator Collins for this

day as follows:

(a) after "29 November 1994" insert ", as amended"; and

(b) omit all words after "not apply to the", substitute "Migration

Legislation Amendment Bill (No. 4) 1995."

The Minister for Family Services (Senator Crowley), at the request of

Senator Collins and pursuant to notice, moved--That the order of the

Senate of 29 November 1994, as amended, relating to the consideration of

legislation, not apply to the Migration Legislation Amendment Bill (No.

4) 1995.

Debate ensued.
