PROPOSED DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

The Acting Deputy President (Senator West) informed the Senate that

Senator Margetts had proposed that the following matter of public

importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion:

The urgent need for a comprehensive package of measures to reduce

Australia's greenhouse emissions.

The proposal was not supported.

Statements by leave: Senator Margetts, the Leader of the Opposition in

the Senate (Senator Hill) and the Minister for Defence (Senator Ray)

made statements relating to the matter.
