Senator Woodley, pursuant to notice of motion not objected to as a

formal motion, moved--That the Senate--

(a) notes that:

(i) on 4 December 1994, ABC Radio National conducted an

appeal for Africa, raising over $500 000, and

(ii) all money raised in the appeal goes to Community Aid

Abroad projects across Africa, assisting people in

areas such as Sudan, Ethiopia, South Africa, Mozambique

and Rwanda;

(b) congratulates the ABC and Radio National for their continuing

commitment to raising awareness of the realities of life for the

people of other continents and raising funds to assist others to

overcome disadvantage; and

(c) calls on the Government:

(i) to continue to support aid to Africa as an important

part of the overall overseas aid budget, and

(ii) to ensure that overseas aid is targeted to assist the

long-term development and empowerment of people in

African and other less advantaged countries.
