DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

The Deputy President (Senator Crichton-Browne) informed the Senate that

Senator Patterson had proposed that the following matter of public

importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion:

The failure of this government's economic and social policies over

eleven years, evidenced by the widening gap between the rich and the

poor in Australia and the shameful situation that in the International

Year of the Family two thirds of the 1.8 million Australians living in

poverty are members of families with children.

The proposal was supported by 4 Senators.

Discussion ensued.
