PETITIONS

The following 5 petitions, lodged with the Clerk by the Senators

indicated, were received:

Senator Childs, from 18 petitioners requesting that the Senate take

action to hold a public enquiry into the Army training manual, "Aid to

the Civil Power' and ensure community input into any document relating

to Australian defence personnel involvement in civil protests or

industrial disputes.

Senator Harradine, from 19 petitioners requesting that the Senate

support the rights of Tasmania to determine its own social laws and

oppose any legislation seeking to override Tasmania's laws.

Senator Kernot, from 102 petitioners requesting that the Senate oppose

attempts by the Government to raise the pension age for women from 60

to 65 years.

Senator Childs, from 18 petitioners requesting that the Senate urge

the Government to insist that former President Aristide of Haiti be

reinstated by peaceful means.

Senator O'Chee, from 1 264 petitioners requesting that the UN

Convention on Desertification not be signed without first receiving

the scrutiny and approval of the Senate.
