BURMA

Senator Jones amended his notice of motion by leave and, pursuant to

notice of motion not objected to as a formal motion, moved--That the

Senate--

(a) notes that:

(i) 20 July 1994 marks the sixth year that the Burmese State Law

and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) has detained without

trial political prisoner, Aung San Suu Kyi, and

(ii) the release of Suu Kyi, a nobel peace prize winner, is

crucial to the democratic reform of Burma; and

(b) urges the Government to continue to press the SLORC in the

strongest manner possible for the immediate and unconditional

release of Aung San Suu Kyi and to take all practicable steps to

maintain pressure on the SLORC to implement democratic reforms,

with the ultimate goal of bringing about democratic government

in Burma.
