MULTICULTURALISM IN AUSTRALIA

Senator Spindler amended his notice of motion by leave and, pursuant to

notice of motion not objected to as a formal motion, moved--That the

Senate--

(a) notes:

(i) the findings of a Saulwick Age Poll, published in the

Age on 7 June 1994, that although a majority of

Australians want new arrivals to live the Australian

way of life, they generally welcome ethnic diversity as

a positive feature of Australian society, and

(ii) that young people accept, by 72 per cent to 24 per

cent, that Australia is a better place for having

citizens from many countries living here,

(b) welcomes the fact that, overall, 65 per cent of all respondents

see diversity of population as a good thing; and

(c) calls on the Government to continue and reaffirm its commitment

to the concept and achievement of Australia's multicultural

diversity.
