DEATH OF FORMER MEMBER THE HONOURABLE SIR DAVID ERIC FAIRBAIRN KBE, DFC

The Deputy President (Senator Crichton-Browne) informed the Senate of

the death, on 1 June 1994, of the Honourable Sir David Eric Fairbairn

KBE, DFC, a member of the House of Representatives for the division of

Farrer from 1949 to 1975.

The Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Gareth Evans), by

leave, moved--That the Senate expresses its deep regret at the death, on

1 June 1994, of the Honourable Sir David Eric Fairbairn KBE, DFC, a

member of the House of Representatives for the division of Farrer from

1949 to 1975, Minister for Air from 1962 to 1964, Minister for National

Development from 1964 to 1969, Minister for Education and Science

between March and August 1971, Minister for Defence from 1971 to 1972

and Leader of the Government in the House of Representatives in 1966,

and places on record its appreciation of his long and meritorious public

service and tenders its profound sympathy to his family in their

bereavement.

The motion was supported and all Senators present stood in silence--
