CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT--ANSWER TO QUESTION--PROPOSED MOTION TO TAKE
NOTE

Leave refused: Senator Panizza sought leave for Senator Crane to move a

motion that the Senate take note of an answer given by the Minister for

Industry, Science and Technology (Senator Cook), in response to a

question without notice asked by Senator Parer this day, relating to the

current account deficit.

An objection was raised and leave was not granted.

Proposed suspension of standing orders: Senator Ian Macdonald, at the

request of Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Hill) and

pursuant to contingent notice, moved--That so much of the standing

orders be suspended as would prevent Senator Hill moving a motion to

provide for the consideration of a matter, namely a motion to give

precedence to a motion to take note of an answer to a question without

notice for a period of five minutes.

Debate ensued.

Question put and negatived.
