DEATH OF ROSEMARY NEVILLE WIGHTON

Senator Reid, at the request of Senator Patterson and pursuant to notice

of motion not objected to as a formal motion, moved--That the Senate--

(a) mourns the loss of the prominent arts and literature figure,

Rosemary Neville Wighton, who died on 7 February 1994 in

Adelaide; and

(b) recognises her outstanding contribution to public life

including:

(i) her contribution to literature, illustrated by her work

on the "Angry Penguins', as an editor of "Australian

Letters' and her participation in the first Australian

book review,

(ii) her contribution to children's literature,

(iii) her role as a tertiary English teacher,

(iv) her work on the Literature Board of the Australia

Council,

(v) her role as adviser to the South Australian Government

on women's affairs, and

(vi) her work as Deputy-Director General of the Department

of Community Welfare.
