DISCUSSION OF MATTER OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE

The President informed the Senate that Senator Ryan had proposed that a matter of public importance be submitted to the Senate for discussion, viz:

''The failure of the Federal Government to secure land rights for Queensland Aboriginals and Islanders''.

And at least four Senators having risen in support of the proposed discussion-

The President called upon Senator Ryan to speak.

Discussion ensued.

Suspension of Standing Orders: Ordered, on the motion of Senator Thomas-That Standing Order 64 be suspended to allow the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Minister for Health (Senator Peter Baume) to speak for 20 minutes.

Discussion ensued.

Paper: Senator Peter Baume laid upon the Table the following Paper from which he had quoted:

Land Act 1962-1978 (Qld)-Extract from the Queensland Land Act 1962-1978.

Discussion continued.
