DEATH OF THE HONOURABLE SIR ALEXANDER RUSSELL DOWNER, K.B.E

The Leader of the Government in the Senate (Senator Carrick) referred to the death, on 30 March 1981, of the Honourable Sir Alexander Russell Downer, K.B.E., and, by leave, moved --That the Senate expresses its deep regret at the death, on 30 March 1981, of the Honourable Sir Alexander Russell Downer, K.B.E., a Member of the House of Representatives for the Division of Angas from 1949 to 1964, a Minister of the Crown from 1958 to 1963, and Australian High Commissioner in London from 1964 to 1972, places on record its appreciation of his long and meritorious public service and tenders its profound sympathy to his widow and family in their bereavement.

And the motion having been seconded by the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate (Senator Button), and supported by the Leader of the National Country Party of Australia in the Senate (Senator Scott), the Leader of the Australian Democrats (Senator Chipp), and Senators Davidson and O'Byrne--

And all Senators present having stood, in silence--
