Senator BRANDIS (QueenslandAttorney-General, Vice-President of the Executive Council and Leader of the Government in the Senate) (21:25): The crime of treason and what used to be defined as the crime of sedition—it is slightly differently described now in the Commonwealth Criminal Code—do not carry with them, at least in the case of a dual citizen who may commit those crimes, automatic loss of citizenship. That is not what those laws provide for. This bill is not about creating new offences; it is about creating new consequences for certain already defined offences: that is, in those defined circumstances, in the case of a dual citizen, who is therefore not somebody protected by the statelessness convention, the loss of Australian citizenship.
