Senator MARGETTS(5.14 p.m.) —Amendment 16 that we have been asked to consider deals with the insertion of definitions related to allowable award matters, exceptional award matters, regular part-time employees and state employment agreements. The elimination in the bill of definitions relating to paid rates awards is maintained. Some of the new definitions could be considered to be an improvement on the current situation but the loss of paid rates awards is consistent with the unchallenged government intention of clause 37.

Therefore, on balance, it is not my intention to support this amendment. I notice that this amendment is in conflict also with the ALP amendments 13 to 17, which in fact oppose items 1 to 5 of the bill. I would also like to flag that I am more inclined to support the amendments which oppose items 1 to 5 in relation especially to paid awards because this is pivotal in what we have ended up with and what the working people of Australia will have ended up with as a result of this bill going through—or being pushed through.

Amendment agreed to.
