(Question No. 175)

Senator Bolkus asked the Minister for Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs, upon notice, on 20 August 1996:

With reference to the appointment of Mr Brendan Smyth as an adviser to the Minister:

(1) Was the position advertised; if so, in what publications; if not, why not.

(2) What are the levels of salary and allowance paid to Mr Smyth.

Are these less than, greater than or equivalent to his previous salary and allowances as the Federal Member for Canberra.

(4) Is Mr Smyth a permanent public servant.

(5) What are his precise roles and duties.

(6)(a) What amount of travel is involved in his position; (b) where is this travel to; and (c) what is its purpose.

(7) How much has this travel cost so far and how much is it expected to cost to the end of the 1996-97 financial year.

Senator Vanstone —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

(1) Mr Smyth responded to the general advertisement placed in the major daily newspapers on 9 March 1996. No positions in the Minister's office were specifically advertised. All positions were filled either from people who responded to general advertisements or who were directly approached.

(2) $60,147 per annum plus Ministerial Staff Allowance of $11,200 per annum.

(3) Less than.

(4) No.

(5) Ministerial Adviser Duties as instructed by the Minister including departmental and community liaison.

(6)(a) As required.

(b) Dates and destinations:-

31 May 1996—Wollongong; 5-6 June 1996—Orange; 12-14 June 1996—Melbourne & Hobart; 17-21 June 1996—Adelaide and Perth; 2-5 July 1996—Sydney; 9-12 July 1996—Townsville and Brisbane; 25-26 July 1996—Newcastle & Sydney; 29-31 July 1996—Shepparton and Bendigo; 5-8 August 1996—Darwin

(c) Liaison with departmental officers and community groups.

(7) The cost of Mr Smyth's travel from 13 May 1996 to 20 August 1996 totalled $9,578.88 for airfares, travelling allowance and car transport. Further travel will be as his duties require.
