Motion (by Senator Brown) negatived:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   the passage of the Northern Territory Rights of the Terminally Ill Act has stirred strong feelings about voluntary euthanasia, and

   (ii)   there is a need to promote well-informed debate about voluntary euthanasia in the community and in the Parliament; and

(b)   requests the President to invite community representatives to present views for and against voluntary euthanasia on the floor of the Senate at a time to be determined, but not later than 30 November 1996.
