Senator HARRADINE —My question is directed to the Minister representing the Minister for Science and Technology and relates to genetic manipulation. What restrictions are placed on genetic manipulation to avoid the dangers of the inadvertent creation of super-resistant diseases? What mandatory reporting requirements are there for GMAC, the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Council, to be advised of the risks? What reporting procedures are there for the minister to be kept informed and advised of dangerous incidents or potentially dangerous incidents involving genetically engineered organisms?

Senator PARER —This is a very complex question. I know Senator Harradine feels very strongly about this. I think his views are shared by many people in this chamber. I have no brief from Minister McGauran on this. I will refer the question to him and come back to you.
