Senator FAULKNER (Leader of the Opposition in the Senate) —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   supports recent comments by the Governor-General, Sir William Deane, on the plight of Aboriginal Australians and victims of racial discrimination and intolerance, and their need for assistance from Government and private individuals;

(b)   reconfirms its commitment to a non-discriminatory immigration policy;

(c)   recognises the achievements of multiculturalism for the unity and tolerance of the Australian community;

(d)   reconfirms its commitment to community education programs to combat racism;

(e)   recognises the need for all Senators to provide leadership to avoid the community division and risk to Australian interests at home and abroad which is caused by any emergence of racial intolerance in this country, and calls on all Senators to continue to present the case for a tolerant, multicultural Australian community;

(f)   reaffirms its support for the process of reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the broader Australian community;

(g)   acknowledges that indigenous people as a group are the most disadvantaged of Australians on every measure of social and economic well-being; and

(h)   recognises:

   (i)   the need of indigenous communities for a sound base from which to develop an economically secure and self-sufficient future, and

   (ii)   the crucial importance of the maintenance of indigenous culture and heritage to the alleviation of the disadvantage currently experienced by indigenous Australians.
