Senator ALLISON —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   on Tuesday, 8 October 1996, the City of Melbourne Planning and Development Committee passed a motion to make a submission to the Federal Government to nominate the Royal Exhibition Building for World Heritage listing,

   (ii)   the Royal Exhibition Building was built in 1880 and is one of the last remaining nineteenth century grand exhibition buildings in the world, and

   (iii)   the Victorian Government proposes to construct a new museum building adjacent to the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens, which may well jeopardise any such World Heritage listing;

(b)   recognises the heritage value of the Royal Exhibition Building; and

(c)   calls on the Victorian Government to delay any decision on proceeding with the work until the Melbourne City Council has prepared its World Heritage listing submission.
