Senator PATTERSON —My question is directed to you as President of the Senate. Following the answer given by the Leader of the Government in the Senate in question time on Monday regarding the riot at Parliament House on 19 August, has the ACTU or have any of the unions involved made any offer to you or to Mr Speaker to reimburse the people of Australia for the damage that was done to the Parliament House building, the shop and other facilities around Parliament House?

The PRESIDENT —No, there has been no offer made to the Speaker or to me. The Speaker and I have written seeking compensation in relation to the estimated amount of damage we were given at that time. We have no reply to that letter at the present time.

Senator PATTERSON —Madam President, I ask a supplementary question: could you tell us the amount involved and could you table the letter?

The PRESIDENT —The amount referred to in the letter I mentioned, which I can produce if senators want it, was $91,000, which is not yet the full amount. We are still awaiting a full report of various damages. The letter was sent to the ACT Trades and Labour Council because they were the group dealings had been held with relating to security in Parliament House.
