(Question No. 104)


Senator Bob Collins asked the Minister representing the Minister for Sport, Territories and Local Government, upon notice, on 20 June 1996:

(1) Does section 45(1) of the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act require that no public moneys of the Northern Territory be issued or expended except as authorised by enactment.

(2) Was proper process followed under the provisions of the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act in respect of payments made to the Minister for Housing and Local Government (Mr Manzie) for a defamation action taken by him against the publisher of the Northern Territory News

in 1990.

(3) Was proper process followed under the provisions of the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act in respect of payments made to the Northern Territory Minister for Health (Mr Finch) for a defamation action taken by him against the Northern Territory Member for MacDonnell (Mr Bell).


Senator Hill —The Minister for Sport, Territories and Local Government has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

(1) Yes.

(2) and (3) The honourable senator may wish to redirect his question to the relevant Minister in the Northern Territory Government.
