That the Senate—

(a)   notes the comments made by Mr Alan Wood in the Australian of 21 August 1996, in which he states, `The horror figures in this Budget are not Peter Costello's spending cuts. They are the $69 billion of deficits accumulated over the past five years of the Labor Government—mostly during the Keating prime ministership. If (Costello) is to be criticised it is not for being too tough, or breaking promises, but for not being tough enough' and concludes by stating, `Instead of playing sleazy games in the Senate, Labor should apologise for its terrible failure as a financial manager and help Costello clean up the mess'; and

(b)   calls on the Australian Labor Party to accept the advice of Mr Wood, pass the 1996-97 Budget and not frustrate the fiscally-responsible Howard Government Budget.
