Senator HILL (Minister for the Environment)(6.06 p.m.) —I congratulate Senator Colston on his election. I recognise that he was a temporary chairman of committees for 12 years before being elected Deputy President and Chairman of Committees on 21 August 1990 and on that occasion defeated the candidate that I had nominated—and it is interesting that the circle may have turned. Nevertheless, we have experienced Senator Colston as Deputy President before. We understand his dedication towards maintaining the dignity of this chamber and his determination to be fair in the chair. So we congratulate him. I might say to Sue West—

Senator Jacinta Collins —Senator.

Senator HILL —Senator Sue West—well, I thought the precedent was set here—I understand, Senator, your disappointment today. I might say that the candidate whom I nominated and who was defeated by Senator Colston in 1990 subsequently became Deputy President of the Senate. So all of us who have been in this business for some time have experienced both highs and lows. Disappointment I can understand today, but disappointment does not last forever.
