Senator CHAMARETTE(4.51 p.m.) —I am standing here with the list of amendments that have been circulated in the name of the Greens (WA). I am looking at item 1, which is not an amendment, but is rather the proposition that we oppose item 3 of schedule 1. This is the item that provides for the reduction in the number of councillors by the population formula contained in the act.

The Greens oppose this item on the basis that there has been no argument put forward to suggest that the new formula will be better than the old, nor has there been any demonstration that the new figures have some compelling argument in their favour. I will not speak any more, but simply indicate our opposition.
