Senator CHAMARETTE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that the week beginning 23 June 1996 is Refugee Week;

(b)   congratulates the organisers on once again raising the awareness of the plight of the world's refugees among the Australian community;

(c)   notes that:

   (i)   the number of refugees around the world continues to rise each year and that, although Australia receives some 13 000 people under the refugee and special humanitarian migration categories, the increase in these categories has not kept pace with the increase in overall numbers, and

   (ii)   the Australian Government still maintains a policy of detaining in custody all applicants for refugee status who arrive without authorisation; and

(d)   calls on the Government to urgently release the detainees and increase the places available to refugees in the Australian migration program.
