Senator SHERRY (Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Senate)(3.25 p.m.) —I rise to support this bill. As Senator Spindler has mentioned, the most important provisions of the bill are aimed against police corruption. Senators will be aware that the current royal commission into the New South Wales Police Service has uncovered quite distressing and appalling instances of corruption and other serious misconduct. Such abuse of power and community trust cannot be tolerated in any police service in this country.

The opposition is firmly committed to ensuring that the force is never debilitated by a culture of corruption and misconduct. We are particularly dependent on the integrity and efficiency of the Australian Federal Police. As I have said, the opposition supports this bill. Again, in the interests of time and our program, I urge the Senate to support the provisions.
