Senator BOLKUS(11.24 a.m.) —The opposition supports those amendments. I do not think the government should have too many problems with them. In essence, they provide for an instant communication to the CEO of Customs as opposed to what is provided in the legislation at this stage—notification in writing.

I see the officers over there are obviously very keen to assist us in clarifying a point they think we probably have wrong. We are prepared to listen to that. We are prepared to support a process which puts Customs on alert virtually instantly rather than, for instance, waiting for a letter which may or may not be the victim of Australia Post or any other such mechanism.
