Senator BOURNE —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

That the Senate—

(a)   notes that:

   (i)   5 June 1996 is World Environment Day,

   (ii)   the land clearing rate in New South Wales is the second worst in Australia and is leading to salinity, desertification, erosion and massive land degradation, and

   (iii)   land clearing is contributing to the greenhouse effect and the loss of habitat for endangered and threatened species; and

(b)   calls on the Government to show a real commitment to the environment by implementing national land clearing controls.
