(Question No. 843)

Senator Calvert asked the President, upon notice, on 7 December 1993:

  (1) What type of candle holders were purchased on behalf of the Joint House Department at a cost of $5,820, with a purchase reference date of 29 January 1993.

  (2) How many candle holders were purchased with this order.

  (3) What type of candle holders were purchased.

  (4) Were the candle holders manufactured in Australia; if not, why not.

  (5) Where will the candle holders be utilised.

The President —The answer to the honourable senator's question is as follows:

  (1) The candle holders are black wrought iron table candle holders that come as a set, one small and one large candle holder per set.

  (2) 60 sets were purchased, ie 120 candle holders in total.

  (3) See (1) above.

  (4) No. The style of the candle holder was chosen from a catalogue by staff of the Parliament's catering contractor as props for table lighting and decoration for functions at Parliament House. The catalogue did not state the country of manufacture.

  (5) The candle holders are used primarily for functions held in Parliament House, typically for PCS catered dinners in the Great Hall, Private Dining Rooms etc. On one occasion approval was given for the use of the candle holders at a function at the War Memorial. The Department charged a hiring fee of $15 per set.
