Senator COLLINS (Minister for Transport and Communications) (9.26 a.m.) —As Senator Parer would be aware, the arrangements that have been set in place are that, in consultation with the states, the Commonwealth will assess whether the procedures that are put in place by the states fit the criteria that the Commonwealth is insisting on, in respect of how the mechanics of native title are going to be administered. The answer to Senator Parer's question is in the positive. The Commonwealth would be looking, in negotiation with the state of Queensland, to ensure that the procedures of the mining wardens court would be consistent with the criteria that the Commonwealth is insisting on. It also re-emphasises the fact that, as a matter of policy in relation to land management, the Commonwealth's central position is that it wants the states to continue to administer that.
