Senator ALSTON (Deputy Leader of the Opposition) (10.16 p.m.) —Given that the government seems to be happy to be associated with this amendment, perhaps I could ask the minister whether he accepts that the effect of this amendment is that an acquisition will not extinguish native title. Is it right that a compulsory acquisition will not extinguish native title in the circumstances where the government regards it as necessary and therefore a freehold title will not be able to be granted in those circumstances?
