Senator GARETH EVANS (Minister for Foreign Affairs) (8.48 p.m.) —I am not sure whether the honourable senator is talking about restrictions on the nature of the title that is being acquired, or restrictions on what can be done with it when it has been acquired, if it is a state. If he is talking about the latter, there are no restrictions. Land acquired for a public purpose can be dealt with by a state for whatever purpose it chooses, in accordance with ordinary state legislation that governs this. There is quite voluminous legislation in every jurisdiction. But there is no particular inhibition on the kinds of titles, in turn, that can be granted by the state once it has acquired the land for the legitimate purpose in question.
