Senator SHERRY (Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy) (2.43 p.m.) —Obviously the opposition and the government on this occasion are supporting the government's measure. To reiterate, this will change the ceiling from $64,938 to $60,000 a year. The existing assets value limit for basic family payments will be reduced from $607,000 to $550,000.

I was not surprised at Senator Harradine's contribution, nor at Senator Woodley's contribution. I appreciate their views and the philosophical position they have. But this government does not agree with them on this particular issue. We have taken a view that these sorts of payments should be targeted much more directly to those families most in need. For those reasons, I have to reject the comments made by Senator Woodley and Senator Harradine.
