Senator HARRADINE (9.09 a.m.) —Then the minister would not mind telling the committee with whom, with which organisations, and with which independent schools this agreement took place. Was there an agreement? On what dates were those agreements made? I make it perfectly clear that, in any event, this chamber has the responsibility of examining legislation such as this and coming to a proper and considered conclusion about it in the best interests of the people concerned.

I am perfectly well aware of the leverage that the government can exert over schools in order to obtain agreements. In this particular area of education, it has been shown time and time again that it can come to agreements from a position like that. Therefore, it is particularly the job of the Senate to examine objectively the measures such as this that are coming before us. I am inclined at this juncture at least to oppose the clauses as Senator Teague has suggested.
