Senator SCHACHT —On Monday of this week Senator Boswell asked me a question about a TPC decision regarding the amalgamation of sugar companies in Queensland specifically for a new sugar factory at Mackay. I indicated to him then that the government's response was that the TPC is an independent body and though submissions were made to its review, including submissions from my department pointing out a number of benefits which would accrue by allowing the merger to take place, the government stated that the TPC is an independent body.

I did indicate, in view of Senator Boswell's keen interest in this issue, that I would have further discussions with my colleagues, specifically the Assistant Treasurer, who is responsible for the TPC. Again, I report to Senator Boswell and to the Senate that the view of the government is unchanged. The TPC is an independent body and it makes its decisions. If people do not accept them, there are proper and appropriate procedures that they can take to appeal to the courts of the land. That is where the situation lies.
