Senator BISHOP —My question is directed to the Minister for Transport and Communications. I refer the minister to the threatened closure of the Palm Beach Post Office which is of considerable interest to the people of the electorate of Mackellar. Is it true that the decision has been taken to preserve the services of the Palm Beach Post Office but that an announcement of the subject will be delayed until the new year, at a time closer to the Mackellar by-election? If so, why is the minister playing party politics with the legitimate concerns of the residents in delaying this announcement?

Senator Vanstone —What have you got to say for yourself?

Senator COLLINS —What have I got to say for myself? You have got me, Senator Bishop—I do not know the answer to that question. I have never been to the Palm Beach Post Office. Has Senator Bishop been to the Palm Beach Post Office?

I have no advice on that matter in my brief. I did not expect to find anything. I will seek an answer for Senator Bishop and hope to get it to her before she leaves the Senate.

The PRESIDENT —It is probably not the role of the Chair to intervene, but I thought I announced in the Manly Daily last week that it was not going to close. Perhaps I am wrong, so I will check it at the same time!

Senator Bishop —Mr President, I raise a point of order. I did not know that you were the minister. If not, how did you get the advice?

The PRESIDENT —I will let you know that later.
