  Motion (by Senator Burns)—by leave—agreed to:

    That the following matter be referred to the Standing Committee on Rural and Regional Affairs for inquiry and report on the last sitting day in December 1994:

A review of Landcare policies and programs in Australia, including:

  (a)strategies and programs to assist catchment management planning, alternative land management systems, and control of feral animals and weeds;

  (b)level and type of support to individuals and communities;

  (c)the adoption of sustainable farming techniques;

  (d)barriers to the implementation of Landcare practices;

  (e)the impact of the rural recession;

  (f)the effectiveness of information and communication networks; and

  (g)the focus, funding and application of research.

Value-adding in agricultural production, with particular reference to:

  (a)strategies and goals;

  (b)role of industry;

  (c)role of governments;

  (d)community involvement;

  (e)incentives for and impediments to value-adding;

  (f)market development; and

  (g)impact on, and potential benefits for, regional areas.
