Senator CRANE (11.25 p.m.) —Opposition amendments Nos 11 and 12 were reliant on amendment No. 5, which was not carried. During the debate on our amendment No. 5, we saw the betrayal of small business in terms of the rights of the commission to grant preference to a union member over a non-union member. We were endeavouring to restrict it to a situation which involved a demarcation dispute and the preference would be granted to a union member over a non-union member. Even though we had been told by the Democrats that they were going to support us, they reneged on that particular commitment. So we will be withdrawing both these amendments because it is pointless to proceed with them.
