Senator BELL (9.02 p.m.) —The Australian Democrats will be supporting this amendment. For the reasons outlined by Senator Margetts, we think it is appropriate that this amendment be made. We think it is not appropriate that at the moment economic considerations can be elevated above anti-discrimination principles. We do not think that is appropriate at this stage of the country's development, nor is it in concert with what is expected of a democratic society. The Greens' amendment would prevent economic considerations overriding the Sex Discrimination Act. We think that is thoroughly appropriate and we will support it.
