Senator TIERNEY (3.25 p.m.) —I want to put on the record some facts about the allocation of these sports grants in the northern seat of Richmond. Senator Schacht completely misled the Senate. He was claiming that the difference between Mackellar and the northern seats was one of poverty and levels of income. Perhaps he could explain why the seats of Richmond and Page on the north coast, both seats with a margin of half to one percent, each received $180,000 in these grants while the seat of Cowper, which is not a marginal seat and which is held by the National Party, got $60,000, one-third of the amount received by the two equally poor seats to its north. The minister cannot explain that because the money was given out, not on the basis of need or poverty, but simply on the basis of their being marginal seats. It was a rort—one of the many that we have seen. The government should be condemned for this action.

  Question resolved in the affirmative.
