(Question No. 749)


Senator Knowles asked the Minister representing the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy the following question upon notice on 2 November 1993:

  With reference to the 1992-93 financial year:

  (1) How many training courses were conducted for departmental staff.

  (2) Where were the training courses held.

  (3) What expenses were incurred on: (a) airfares; (b) other travel; (c) accommodation; (d) conference facilities; (e) any other associated expenses.

  (4) What was the duration of each course (number of days).

  (5) How many staff attended each course.


Senator Cook —The Minister for Primary Industries and Energy has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) In 1992-93, 343 training courses were conducted (that is initiated and organised within the department) for Departmental staff.

  (2) The training courses were held in a variety of locations. For Canberra based staff, 90 per cent were held on Departmental premises, 8 per cent were held in the Canberra and 2 per cent were held outside of Canberra. In the regions, courses were generally held at the educational institution providing the training.

  (3) The following expenses in total were incurred: airfares $115,190; other travel $31,978; accommodation $214,239; conference facilities $43,920; and, other expenses $453,365.

  (4) The duration of each course varied, with the most frequent length of training course being in the range of 1-2 days.

  (5) Staff attendance at each course varied, but the mean attendance per training course across the Department was 30.
