Senator FAULKNER (Manager of Government Business in the Senate) —I seek leave to withdraw government business notice of motion No. 1, standing in the name of Senator Collins, relating to sitting on Friday of this week and to make a brief explanatory statement relating to this matter.

  Leave granted.

Senator FAULKNER —As a result of discussions amongst honourable senators, and in view of a number of undertakings given to me by the Leader of the Opposition (Senator Hill) on behalf of the opposition in regard to the legislation program for the remainder of these sittings, the government will not be proceeding with government business notice of motion No. 1. I inform the Senate that I will be proposing that the routine of business for the remainder of this session will include agreed provisions to ensure that, firstly, general business time tomorrow and on Thursday of next week will be devoted to legislation; secondly, at lunchtime tomorrow and on Thursday of next week non-controversial legislation will be dealt with before matters of public interest; and, thirdly, the whole of the government's legislation program will be dealt with before the end of the sittings.

I thank the opposition for its cooperation in this matter. As I said at the commencement of my remarks, I take a great deal of pleasure in withdrawing government business notice of motion No. 1 so that honourable senators can go home a little earlier than they may otherwise have expected.
