Senator DENMAN —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

    (a)notes that:

      (i)it is the intention of the Groom Liberal Government in Tasmania to lift the beach price royalty paid by abalone divers from 5 per cent to a massive 25 per cent,

      (ii)at no stage has the industry been consulted on this sudden imposition,

      (iii)uncertainty has been placed on the rest of the Tasmanian fishing industry with no security of income in light of such an autocratic decision,

      (iv)banks are refusing to lend money to the abalone industry as a result of the legislation, and

      (v)some divers will go bankrupt as a result of the decision;

    (b)agrees with the concerns of the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy (Mr Crean) about the implications for the National Fishing Industry Agenda of this huge increase; and

    (c)urges the Groom Government to acknowledge that abalone industry representatives are prepared to negotiate an increase to the royalties within reason.
