Senator CHAMARETTE (9.33 p.m.) —I mentioned in my speech on the second reading that the government had informed me that it would be moving some amendments that covered the purpose of the amendments that have been circulated in my name, with the exception of a change of date from January 1994 to July 1996. I was not informed until after my speech that the government would move its amendments via the Australian Democrats. I am equally happy to withdraw my amendments in favour of those put forward by Senator Kernot.

The Greens support these because they address the most important issue of self-determination via election rather than appointment of the position of commission chairperson and remove any paternalistic overtones of the 19 May debate in which the principle of appointment was retained. I mention this now because I am not able to participate further and I did not want the committee to be left in doubt of my position. We will be supporting the Democrats' amendments but opposing those of the opposition.
