Senator IAN MACDONALD —I give notice that, on the next day of sitting, I shall move:

  That the Senate—

  (a)notes that:

    (i)the North Queensland Local Government Association (NQLGA) has resolved to hold a referendum on the Tully-Millstream Hydro-electricity extension at the Local Government elections on 26 March 1993, and

    (ii)almost all local authorities between Sarina and Cooktown have expressed strong support for the project;

  (b)applauds the NQLGA for initiating the referendum;

  (c)notes that a `yes' vote will get the proposal back on the political agenda and give the Queensland Government yet more backing for renewed approaches to the Federal Government to gain approval for the scheme;

  (d)calls on the people of north Queensland to support the scheme by voting `yes' in the referendum; and

  (e)calls on the Federal Government to accept the decision of the people, and cease misusing its powers over the World Heritage Listed Wet Tropics area to stall the project indefinitely.
