To the Honourable the President and Members of the Senate in the Parliament assembled

  The petition of the undersigned shows:

We the undersigned citizens respectfully submit that the Keating Government's decision to close down HMAS Huon is clearly and demonstrably wrong and should be reversed having regard to:

(a)The fact that HMAS Huon has been part of the Royal Australian Navy in Tasmania for over 80 years;

(b)It has continually demonstrated itself to be a most efficient shore-based designated Naval facility and Headquarters for the Royal Australian Navy in Tasmania;

(c)Its closure will place at risk the immediate future in Tasmania of 25 permanent Royal Australian Navy personnel, 108 active Reservists and 40 inactive Reservists and in addition will deprive the Naval Reserve Cadets of their Tasmanian Divisional Headquarters; and, the fact that only a miserable $250,000 will be allegedly saved out of the National Defence budget of over $9 billion,

and therefore call upon the Keating Government to immediately reverse the decision to close HMAS Huon and to give a commitment that it will continue to be the Headquarters of the Royal Australian Navy in Tasmania.

And your petitioners, as in duty bound, will ever pray.
