Senator KERNOT (Leader of the Australian Democrats) (12.25 p.m.) —I just want to address a couple of the comments that Senator Sherry made. The fact is that the community legal services are not staffed entirely by lawyers. A lot of people work there as volunteers; they give their advice and information for free. I think honourable senators would find that those lawyers who do work there actually work for a very low salary. That is because the sorts of people who work there are motivated by values other than salary scale. They actually care about consumers having access to low-cost, independent advice.

The government has the ISC to give it advice. The superannuation funds have ASFA. At this point, consumers do not have anybody in particular. I think that will come because we all know how important superannuation and superannuation funds are going to become. It paints a false picture of all of those dedicated people who work in community legal centres to put them, first and foremost, as money hungry lawyers.
