Senator Calvert asked the Minister representing the Minister for Employment, Education and Training, upon notice, on 19 October 1993:

  (1) What period of time is covered by the payment of $8,500 to Newsnet Pty Ltd, Pyrmont, New South Wales in September 1993 for the distribution of media releases.

  (2) How are the media releases distributed.

  (3) Does this cover the whole of the department or only the Australian Capital Territory and southern New South Wales area; if only the Australian Capital Territory and southern New South Wales area, what are the costs associated with distributing media releases to the whole of New South Wales, and the rest of the States for the same period of time.

  (4) How many other companies are involved in the distribution of press releases for the department.

  (5) What is the total cost, Australia wide, for these services for the 1990-91, 1991-92 and 1992-93 financial years and the 1993-94 financial year to date.


Senator Robert Ray —The Minister for Employment, Education and Training has provided the following answer to the honourable senator's question:

  (1) The payment of $8,500 to Newsnet Pty Ltd, Pyrmont, New South Wales, covers the distribution of Portfolio media and information releases for a period of two months.

  (2) Portfolio media and information releases are distributed electronically via facsimile facilities.

  (3) The payment of $8,500 covers distribution of media and information releases from the Department's Central Office in Canberra. For the Department's State and Territory Offices for the same period, the costs of using distribution services were:

  New South Wales—$1,650; Victoria—$400; Queensland—$600

  The services of agencies are not used by DEET State Offices in South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. These offices issue very few media and information releases and distribute them directly from the Department.

  (4) Two companies provide a facsimile service for the electronic distribution of media and information releases for the Department: Newsnet Pty Ltd and AAP Information Services Pty Ltd.

  (5) 1990-91—$43,619.14; 1991-92—$42,944.80; 1992-93—$69,656.30; 1993-94 (to date)—$23,924.00
