Senator Calvert asked the Minister representing the Minister for Social Security, upon notice, on 12 October 1993:

  (1) What services did the Department receive for the $22,070 paid to the Stafford Group, Preston, Victoria, for the publicity for the summer 1993-94 corporate wardrobe.

  (2) What was/is the budget for the summer 1993-94 corporate wardrobe.

  (3) What employees of the department wear the corporate wardrobe.

  (4) What response has been received to the summer 1993-94 corporate wardrobe.

  (5) What is the cost of the components of the summer 1993-94 corporate wardrobe.

  (6) Who made the components of the summer 1993-94 corporate wardrobe.

  (7) What fabric was used for making the summer 1993-94 corporate wardrobe.

  (8) Where was this fabric made.

  (9) How much has the department spent on the corporate wardrobes over the past 2 financial years.


Senator Richardson —The Minister representing the Minister for Social Secretary has provided the following answer to Senator Calvert's question:

  (1) $22,070 covered the cost of production of a mail order catalogue and order forms for the Summer 1993 release.

  (2) The anticipated cost to the Department of the summer 1993-94 release is $42,000. This includes the $22,070 for the catalogues and order forms.

  (3) The Department encourages all staff to wear the corporate wardrobe. Nearly 12,000 orders have been received and there is a high acceptance in the regional network.

  (4) The total number of orders received was 1428.

  (5) The costs of components for the Summer 1993-94 wardrobe are:

  Men: Blazers—$192; Trousers—$86-$71; Shorts—$56; Shirts—$29-$40; Knitwear—$77-$97; Ties—$14; Socks—$7; Belts—$16; Hat—$49; Briefcase—$35

  Women: Jackets—$69-$178; Skirts—$69-$112; Slacks—$84; Blouses—$56; Dresses—$81-$95; Knitwear—$46-$92; Belt—$15; Scarves—$17-$19; Hat—$25-$49; Hair Accessories—$4-$9.

  (6) The components of the 1993-94 summer corporate wardrobe are made by Stafford Group Pty Ltd or purchased by Stafford from Australian-based companies.

  (7) The fabrics used for making the Summer 1993-94 corporate wardrobe are of the following types:

  Garments: 70% Wool/30% Polyester; 75% Polyester/25% Cotton; 65% Polyester/35% Cotton; 55% Polyester/45% Wool; 100% Polyester; 100% Pure Wool

  Belts: Leather

  Socks: Cotton Blend

  Ties: 100% Polyester

  Scarves: 100% Polyester

  (8) The fabric used was Australian made with the exception of:

  75% Polyester/25% cotton blend material which was made in USA;

  100% Polyester material which was made in Korea.

  (9) The Department does not subsidise the purchase by staff of the wardrobe, although it contributes towards promotion and freight costs:

  For 1991/92:

  Freight Charges:  $88,466

  Promotion/Production costs:  $63,178

  Total:  $151,644

  For 1992/93:

  Freight Charges:  $55,182

  Promotion/Production Costs:  $23,000

  Total:  $78,182
